Key exclusions

All iPhone insurance policies have to contain exclusions to help reduce fraud and keep premiums affordable, and ours are no different. Even so, Tinhat policies are designed to be incredibly fair and simple to understand, and so we've highlighted the key exclusions below:

iPhone exclusions

Pre-owned iPhones - we aren't able to insure any iPhones that were bought second hand. This includes iPhones purchased from private individuals and also second-hand goods stores like CeX.

iPhones bought more than 12 months ago - you won't be able to take out cover for your iPhone if it was bought more than 12 months ago.

Refurbished iPhones without a 12-month warranty - we can't insure your refurbished iPhone unless it was sold with at least a 12-month warranty.

Claims for incidents within the first 14 days of taking out your policy (unless your iPhone is less than 60 days old) - this is to help us prevent fraudulent claims, which in turn allows us to provide affordable insurance to our genuine customers.

Accidental damage exclusions

Cosmetic Damage - we can't repair or replace your iPhone if the damage to it is simply cosmetic (things like scratches, stains or minor chips to the body). We can repair your iPhone if it's broken, but we can't restore it to new condition.

Theft Exclusions

Theft from an unattended personal vehicle - unless your iPhone is out of view in a closed compartment and the vehicle is locked.

Theft in a public place where your phone is left unattended - for example, if you leave your iPhone on a pub table and it's stolen while you go to buy a drink. Our insurance still requires you to take reasonable precautions to protect your phone.

To find out more about what we cover, and any exclusions, please read our terms and conditions.

How can I pay?

If you decide to pay monthly then you'll just need to enter your Direct Debit details during checkout. If you decide to pay for the year upfront (this gets you 12 months of iPhone cover for the price of 11) then you can pay with any of the following cards using our secure online payment provider:

American ExpressVisaMastercardMaestro

Paymentsense, our payment provider, uses the very latest technology to ensure that your personal details are kept safe.

All premiums are inclusive of Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) which is currently 12%.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions, plus some links to more information if you need it:

What models of iPhone do you insure?

We can insure any iPhone model, including the iPhone SE, iPhone 7 and 7 plus, iPhone 8 and 8 plus, the iPhone X, XR, XS and the XS Max - as long as it was bought new or refurbished (with a 12-month warranty) in the UK. It could have been purchased outright from a high street or online shop, or bundled as part of a pay as you go of mobile phone contract from a network like O2, Three, EE or Vodafone. Your iPhone does, however, need to be less than 12 months old at the time that you purchase the policy in order to be eligible for our insurance.

What's mechanical breakdown cover?

If your iPhone develops a mechanical fault and stops working this will usually be covered under Apple's warranty. This usually lasts 1 year from the date that you purchased the phone, and during this period Apple should be your first port of call for this type of issue. If your iPhone breaks down outside your warranty period, your Tinhat policy has you covered. Apple do let you buy extended warranties with some accidental damage cover built in. Click here for more information on how we compare to AppleCare+.

Do you offer multi-gadget policies for families and businesses?

Absolutely. If you'd like to insure more than one phone, simply click the "add another gadget" button once you have a quote for your first mobile and you can add up to 10 different devices to the same policy. If you're buying on behalf of a business then it's best to get in touch with us with your requirements on sales@tinhat.co.uk.

How can I pay for my insurance?

You can pay for your cover in one of two ways. You can pay monthly by direct debit or annually by credit or debit card. If you pay annually you'll get 12 months of cover for the price of 11.

Do you insure refurbished iPhones?

Yes, we can insure refurbished iPhones as long as they are bought with at least a 12-month warranty. Click here to find out more about our refurbished phone insurance.

If I buy insurance today, when will my cover start?

If you order your mobile insurance policy today, and your iPhone is less than 60 days old, your cover will start immediately. If your iPhone is more than 60 days old at the time you take out the insurance then you won't be covered for any incident occurring during the first 14 days of your policy.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes! We believe we offer some of the best insurance in the UK, but if you don't need our cover anymore or you decide to leave us you can cancel your policy at any time. If you cancel within the first 14 days of buying your policy then you'll get a full refund of any premium paid. After this period the following applies:

  • If you're paying monthly and haven't made any claims we'll simply stop taking direct debit payments and you'll be covered up to the end of your billing month. If however you have made a claim in the first 12 months and decide to cancel you will still need to pay any remaining premiums for the 12 month contract.
  • If you're paying annually and wish to cancel then you'll receive a pro-rata refund.

For full details please read our cancellation policy.

Can I insure my child's iPhone?

Of course! If your children are under 18 years old, their iPhones can be insured as long as you take out the mobile cover in your name. They'll be covered as part of the immediate family feature. Click here for full details on our phone insurance for children.

What kind of replacement iPhone do you provide?

If you iPhone is lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair and needs replacing, we will replace it with an equivalent refurbished model. In the majority of cases this will be an identical iPhone of the same model and colour, but unfortunately we can't guarantee this. If your mobile can't be replaced with an identical one of the same age and condition, we'll replace it with one of comparable specification or the equivalent value taking into account the age and condition of the original phone. Where an equivalent refurbished item is not available, we'll it replace with a new one instead.

Can't I just cover my iPhone on my home insurance?

You probably can - but you'll need to specify it on your home contents insurance policy in order to be covered, and this might increase your premium. Home insurance policies tend to have much higher excess charges than dedicated gadget insurance, so while this might seem more convenient it could end up being a lot more expensive when you need to make a claim.

What's the excess?

For iPhones valued up to £250 when new the excess is £50. iPhones valued up to £750 have an excess fee of £75. iPhone worth £751 or more have a £100 excess. These excesses apply to any type of claim that you make, and unlike some insurers they don't increase if you claim multiple times, claim early or claim abroad.

Do you sell insurance with no excess?

We don't sell gadget cover with no excess, and aren't aware of any companies in the UK that do. Excess fees are important as they help to cover the administration cost of claims, while keeping premiums low, and ensure that we provide our customers with an excellent service. They also help to deter fraudulent claims, which again helps to keep our insurance policies affordable for our genuine customers.
