2019: The year of the 5G phone?

5G smartphones are going to be taking over in 2019, with many of the biggest names in the business already confirming 5G-ready handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy S10, Huawei P30, and OnePlus 7 are scheduled for launch next year.

So what is 5G?

It seems everyone's talking 5G right now – not just for 5G phones, but for smart devices around the home, self-driving cars, smart cities, always-on laptops, and much more. But what exactly is 5G? And how is it going to make a difference to our tech use in the future?

5G is the latest wireless transmission standard being looked at by the International Telecommunication Union or ITU and other industry bodies – it's the successor to 4G or LTE, which succeeded 3G (can you spot the pattern?). Once phones and the network infrastructure have been made 5G-capable, we can all start enjoying faster upload and download speeds.

The phones

Samsung Galaxy S10

Samsung 5G handset is so close you can almost touch it. With sources suggesting that the Galaxy S10 will be launched at an event on February 20, 2019. According to the same report, the latest Galaxy hardware will be available to pre-order as soon as the keynote finishes, with an official Samsung Galaxy S10 release date pegged for Friday March 8, 2019.

Huawei P30 or Mate 30

Not only are we expecting Huawei’s new release to support 5G, it is also rumoured that it will have 5 cameras (like the Nokia 9 PureView). The company have promised that its first 5G phone will go on sale “before the end of June 2019” after it releases its first 5G Kirin modem and processor in March.

It’s also worth noting that Huawei confirmed that the 5G phone will also have a foldable screen!

Oneplus 7 or Oneplus 7T

OnePlus says that its first 5G phone won’t be the successor to the OnePlus 6T, but we expect them to release a special 5G version under the name the OnePlus 7T.

Honor 5G Phone

In September last year Honor confirmed that they too will be launching a 5G handset in 2019. They didn’t go into much detail on when we can expect it, but it’s certainly a big move for a brand who are seen as a more affordable option to the other big brands.

Sony Xperia XZ4

Sony’s new piece of kit is expected to launch at the MWC 2019 tradeshow in Barcelona in February. Reports claim that Sony are moving away from the samey designs of recent years and will be offering a notchless 21:9 display, 3 rear cameras and a thinner device than any other on the market.

New Iphone (2019)

It’s safe to suggest that we’ll have to wait awhile before the next iPhone comes out. September to be precise. However, rumours are already starting to circulate. These rumours include three models in different sizes with different specs, triple-lens rear cameras and, yes, the first 5G iphone.

Google

Google haven’t revealed plans for 5G. However, Verizon have confirmed that it’s planning to roll out 5G in 2019.

What does that have to do with Google?

For the past few years, Google has tapped Verizon as its exclusive carrier partner for its Pixel phones, including the new Pixel 3. This could mean that Google's next flagship, presumably called the Pixel 4, could be a 5G phone. If it sticks with its usual phone launch schedule, the Pixel 4 would debut around October 2019.
