iPhone insurance vs. AppleCare+

If you're thinking about buying a new iPhone you might be considering what the best way to keep it protected from accidental damage, theft and loss is. Of course there are a whole host of options available to you, from using a case, self-insuring, adding it to your home contents insurance or getting a premium bank account.

Two of the most popular options are buying AppleCare+ or getting standalone iPhone insurance. There are some key differences between them, so in order to help you decide which is best we've highlighted the main differences between AppleCare+ and Tinhat iPhone insurance.

Which iPhones are eligible?

AppleCare+ - If you want to buy AppleCare+, you need to do so during checkout or within 60 days of buying your iPhone from an Apple store or Apple.com. So if it has been more than 60 days since you purchased your mobile you probably won't be able to buy it. You also need to have bought your iPhone directly from Apple, so if you got it on contract from a mobile phone network it also won't be eligible.

Tinhat - iPhone insurance is available for phones that are up to 12 months old, and covers iPhones bought directly from Apple, mobile phone networks and other UK retailers.

How much does it cost to buy?

AppleCare+ - At the time of writing AppleCare+ costs £109 for iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, and £79 for all other models. This provides up to two years of cover, and there is no way to extend this cover past 2 years if you decide to keep your phone for longer.

Tinhat - Cover for accidental damage, mechanical breakdown and theft costs £6.49 a month (or £71.39 annually). Adding loss cover brings the cost up to £7.49 a month (or £82.39 annually). Cover can be maintained for up to a maximum of 5 years, so if you decide to keep your iPhone for more than 2 years you can still keep it insured.

What are the excesses?

AppleCare+ - At the time of writing there is an excess fee of £55 for each accidental damage claim for an iPhone 6 or earlier model, and £79 for an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus.

Tinhat - excesses are £50 for any claim.

Is there a limit to the number of claims?

AppleCare+ - Maximum of two accidental damage claims during the 2 year period of cover.

Tinhat - No limit to the number of claims.

What's covered?

AppleCare+ - extends warranty to 2 years, up to two incidents of accidental damage, coverage against batteries that retain less than 80% of their original capacity.

Tinhat - unlimited claims for accidental damage, theft, loss (optional), mechanical breakdown outside of warranty and unauthorised calls.
