Festival giving away 'bungees' to help keep your phone safe

Repeating the success of last year, Leicestershire Police and Download Festival organisers Festival Republic will be giving away 5,500 free phone bungees to those attending the event. The phone bungees attach to your mobile using a silicon loop that grips your mobile securely and attaches it to your belt loop via a bungee cord.

These accessories are particularly great at preventing accidental damage to your phone by stopping your mobile from hitting the ground if you drop it - but they also make it much more difficult to accidentally misplace your phone during this busy festival, or indeed have your phone stolen.

DC Kev Walker said; “The bungees were phenomenally popular last year with hundreds of people constantly asking us for them. Our Chief Constable even gave away the one he was using!! They were very popular but they were also very effective as we only had 11 mobile phone thefts reported to us. We’d like to keep the numbers low again if we can and the bungee is a really easy way of making sure your phone remains attached to you and cannot be stolen.”

Of course these bungees aren't going to stop a determined thief, so we'd still advise that you be extra careful with your mobile phone when visiting Download. For example, try to keep your phone concealed in a pocket or secure bag when not in use to avoid attracting the attention of thieves.

Here are a few other tips for keeping your phone and other valuables safe:

  • Don't leave your phone in your tent unattended, as this is just asking for trouble. Always take your phone with you, or hire a secure locker for for between £7 and £16 at www.lockerhouse.co.uk.
  • Don't leave your phone in your car unattended, even if it's locked. and if you really have to make sure that it's out of site in a glove compartment or boot.
  • Be careful of pickpockets. Even if you use a phone bungee you can't guarantee that your mobile won't be stolen from your person at a festival, so make sure that you're aware of the people around you and look out for any suspicious behaviour.

Of course we'd also suggest that you consider getting mobile phone insurance if you haven't already. This could help you get a speedy repair or replacement should the worst happen to your mobile at Download Festival this weekend.
