Clear and reasonable excesses

At Tinhat, if you make a claim your excess will be £50 for phones valued up to £400, £75 for phones up to £750 and £100 for phones valued at £751 or more. It's the same for all types of claim.

Family phone insurance
Cover for use by immediate family

Unlike many insurance policies your phone is also covered while being used by immediate family, with no restrictions on their age. This also means that if you want to insure your child's mobile phone you can do so in your name.

Unlimited phone insurance claims
Unlimited claims

Some insurers impose limits on the number of claims you can make, or have different limits for accidental damage and loss claims. At Tinhat there is no limit to the number of claims that you can make.

Gadgets at university

It's well documented that your years at university can be some of the best of your life, but sometimes they're not so kind to your phones and gadget:

"Foam got the better of my phone"

"I went to a foam party during freshers week and my phone got soaked, I only realised that my phone was broken when I was walking home " - James, Notingham Trent University

"I took a trip with my laptop"

"I was really late for a lecture and had to sneak in half way through, only I tripped going up the stairs. Not only was an entire lecture theatre staring at me, I fell onto my brand new laptop" - Emily, Brunel University

"Someone checked my phone out of the libary"

"I left my phone on a desk in the library, it was gone when I went back to get it. I was only gone for 2 minutes" - Lisa, Loughborough University

Key exclusions

All mobile phone insurance policies contain exclusions, and Tinhat is no different. That said, we think ours are some of the fairest and simplest to understand and we're keen to make sure that you're aware of them before purchasing:

Mobile phone exclusions

Second hand phones - unfortunately we can't cover any second hand phones. That includes second hand phones bought from private individuals and also second hand goods stores like CeX.

Phones bought more than 12 months - if you bought your gadget more than 12 months ago you won't be able to insure it with Tinhat.

Refurbished phones that were bought without 12-month warranty - we can't insure refurbished phones that were bought without at least a 12-month warranty.

Claims for incidents within the first 14 days of taking out your policy (unless you phone is less than 60 days) - this is to help us prevent fraudulent claims, which in turn allows us to provide affordable insurance to our genuine customers.

Accidental damage exclusions

Cosmetic Damage - our insurance policies don't cover things like scratches, stains or minor chips to the body of your phone. We can repair your phone if it's broken, but we can't restore it to new condition.

Theft Exclusions

Theft from inside commercial vehicles - so if you're a taxi driver, this insurance won't cover you for theft while you're using your vehicle.

Theft from an unattended personal vehicle - unless your phone is out of view in a closed compartment and the vehicle is locked.

Theft in a public place where your phone is left unattended - for example, if you leave your phone on a pub table and it's stolen while you go to buy a drink. Our insurance still requires you to take reasonable precautions to protect your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions, plus some links to more information if you need it:

What mobile phones do you insure?

We can insure any type of mobile phone, provided that it was bought as new in the UK. It could have been purchased outright from a high street or online shop, or bundled as part of a pay as you go of mobile phone contract from a network like O2, Three, EE or Vodafone. The phone does however need to be less than 12 months old at the time that you purchase the policy in order to be eligible for our insurance. We also offer gadget cover and iPad insurance.

What's mechanical breakdown cover?

If your phone develops a mechanical fault and stops working this will usually be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. This warranty usually lasts 2 years from the date that you purchased the phone, and during this period it should be your first port of call for this type of issue. If your phone breaks down outside your warranty period, your Tinhat policy has you covered. Some manufacturer's like Apple let you buy extended warranties with some accidental damage cover built in. Click here for more information on how we compare to AppleCare+.

How can I pay for my insurance?

You can pay for your gadget cover in one of two ways. You can pay monthly by direct debit or annually by credit or debit card. If you pay annually you'll get 12 months of cover for the price of 11.

Do you insure refurbished phones?

Yes, we can insure refurbished mobile phones as long as they are bought in the UK with at least a 12-month warranty. Click here to find out more about our refurbished phone insurance.

If I buy insurance today, when will my cover start?

If you order your mobile insurance policy today, and your phone is less than 60 days old, your cover will start immediately. If your mobile is more than 60 days old at the time you take out the insurance then you won't be covered for any incident occurring during the first 14 days of your policy.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes! We believe we offer some of the best gadget insurance in the UK, but if you don't need our cover anymore or you decide to leave us you can cancel your policy at any time. If you cancel within the first 14 days of buying your policy then you'll get a full refund of any premium paid. After this period the following applies:

  • If you're paying monthly and haven't made any claims we'll simply stop taking direct debit payments and you'll be covered up to the end of your billing month. If however you have made a claim in the first 12 months and decide to cancel you will still need to pay any remaining premiums for the 12 month contract.
  • If you're paying annually and wish to cancel then you'll receive a pro-rata refund.

For full details please read our cancellation policy.

What kind of replacement phone do you provide?

If you phone is lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair and needs replacing, we will replace it with an equivalent refurbished model. In the majority of cases this will be an identical phone of the same model and colour, but unfortunately we can't guarantee this. If the phone can't be replaced with an identical one of the same age and condition, we'll replace it with one of comparable specification or the equivalent value taking into account the age and condition of the original phone. Where an equivalent refurbished item is not available, we'll it replace with a new one instead.

Can't I just cover my phone on my home insurance?

You probably can - but you'll need to specify it on your home contents insurance policy in order to be covered, and this might increase your premium. Home insurance policies tend to have much higher excess charges than dedicated gadget insurance, so while this might seem more convenient it could end up being a lot more expensive when you need to make a claim.

What's the excess?

For phones valued up to £400 when new the excess is £50. Phones valued up to £750 have an excess fee of £75. Phones valued over £751 have an excess of £100. These excesses apply to any type of claim that you make, and unlike some insurers they don't increase if you claim multiple times, claim early or claim abroad. We believe we have some of the clearest and fairest excesses in the UK.

Do you sell mobile phone insurance with no excess?

We don't sell gadget cover with no excess, and aren't aware of any companies in the UK that do. Excess fees are important as they help to cover the administration cost of claims, while keeping premiums cheap, and ensure that we provide our customers with an excellent service. They also help to deter fraudulent claims, which again helps to keep our insurance policies affordable for our genuine customers.

How else can I keep my phone safe?

As well as buying insurance, there are a number of things you can do to help keep your phone safe. Ofcom have put together some useful advice on this.
